Tom O'Bedlam - Journal

6th September 1999

What am I doing here? Here, incidentally, is the back of a carriage on its way to Camelot. I go to all the nicest places. I've just been nearly killed and, as I get more and more morose - particularly as this road isn't terribly smooth - I'm wondering if nearly wasn't good enough.

I'd told myself I was going to leave this group behind, but then Loki appeared to me to let me know that Jabe, or Merlin as I suppose I have to call him now, was in trouble. Trouble entirely of his own making, I should point out, but I'm not so heartless as to leave a friend to die if I can help. So here I am stuck one thousand years in the past, fighting fairies and trying to avoid speaking to Naomi. I was forced to enter a jousting contest in order to save her from the amorous attentions of a fairy king. I can't fight, can't even ride, so I fully expected to get killed. It didn't bother me so much. Jake had provided me with some enchanted weapons and armour, which I have no doubt saved my life and, amazingly, I won the contest. I remember how it felt swinging that warhammer, smashing seven bells out of my opponent. It felt good. It gave me a fantastic release for my pent up anger and frustration. Was that Steven showing his face again, proving that Tom isn't the pacifist he thinks he is, or am I even more screwed up that I thought?

I want to go home.
