His magic appears to be based on very different principles to normal magic. In actual fact he is Myrddin returned. After promising to return when Arthur's line needed him, Myrddin was locked in an enchanted realm for centuries. Recently awoken when the magic sustaining the realm began to fail, he now seeks Arthur and his decendants while seeking ways to bring magic back to what it was in his time.
